Some Android users have detected a WhatsApp error deleting their old chats. The bug that seems to be affecting a group of users for a long time was recently noticed on Twitter. Some users believe that the new development is a result of the announcement made last November. It affects the deletion of all Google Drive backups older than a year. WhatsApp has confirmed the error in a 360 Gadgets directive. The cause of the problem, however, is unknown.

"We are aware of this error and are working on an update for the users who have detected this issue," said a WhatsApp spokesperson in a statement emailed to Gadgets 360.

The error reported by WhatsApp beta viewer WABetaInfo last week reportedly erased old messages unnoticed. It is unclear whether the bug is contained in older WhatsApp versions or even exists in the latest version.

"I'm about to get out of the June 2018 issue. I'm losing very important old messages, I sent too many emails to WhatsApp, now they stop responding to me, I tried everything, including reset phone, other WA [ WhatsApp] version, phone change, but no use [sic], "wrote one of the affected users on Twitter.

We could not independently verify the reported problem. However, some users believe the issue is due to the WhatsApp decision made in November to delete old Google Drive backups. The Facebook-owned company has warned that Android users who have not backed up their data and chats on Google Drive for over a year will lose their older backups.

However, users are advised to regularly back up their data and chats in Google Drive to protect them.
